FOR ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS
We're excited to be hosting an autumn Solo Jazz workshop with fabulous dancer Cati Gentili.
During this Solo Jazz workshop you will explore and solidify your solo jazz technique and expression. Starting from the big pillar of phrasing in jazz and the use of simple but effective rhythms, we will then move towards exploring full body grooves both in improvisation and choreography.
Ultimately, these sessions will aim to provide both a strong technical foundation and a practice method that you can continue to use in your dance journey. The final goal will always be uncovering your individual expression and body-connection through this beautiful dance form.
The workshop is for all levels of dancers. Ideally you'll have at least a basic knowledge of Solo Jazz or Lindy Hop, or are an experienced dancer from another discipline. However, if you're a confident mover, feel free to join us if you're ready to give Solo Jazz a try!
There will be two 1.5-hour sessions with a 30-minute break in the middle.
ABOUT CATI
Cati Gentili is from Italy and was previously based in the Netherlands where she helped set up Swing Out Maastricht. Since moving to the UK, she has taught regularly in Bristol and in London where she now lives, as well as at festivals around the country. Cati continues to travel around Europe to learn from international instructors and take part in competitions.
Cati encourages her students to seek a balance between challenge and acceptance, while enjoying the learning process. Her solo jazz classes are energising, with plenty of dancing time for figuring out and memorising moves. In class, Caterina loves to make time for watching vintage videos and discuss the origins of Vernacular Jazz.
We're making the most of Cati's current proximity to bring her to Brighton to share her passion for Solo Jazz!
WHAT IS SOLO JAZZ?
Solo Jazz, also known as Authentic Jazz or Jazz Roots, emerged alongside the development of jazz music itself in the early twentieth century. It has its roots in traditional West African dance and evolved in African American communities with European influences.
Solo Jazz moves are a key element of Lindy Hop and learning Solo will enhance your partner dancing no end! It's also a lovely way to hang out on the dancefloor and connect with the music, either dancing with a group of others or on your own.
