Solo Jazz with Gabs Novellino - Sat 9th May

FOR ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS - IDEALLY WITH SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF SWING DANCE

The amazing Gabs Novellino is visiting the UK from Brazil and is teaching at just a few locations across the country while she's here. We are thrilled she is stopping off in Brighton to share her passion for Solo Jazz with us!

The workshop is for all levels of dancers, though ideally you'll have at least a basic knowledge of Solo Jazz or Lindy Hop, or are an experienced dancer from another discipline.

There will be two sessions with a break in the middle:

SESSION 1 - Move Your Spirit (1.5 hours)

This Workshop is all about finding your own style and personality! Inspired by the dancers in the iconic documentary The Spirit Moves, you will get to learn different variations of classic Authentic Jazz moves and explore your own voice within them. This class covers:

📖 Historical and Cultural Background of the Dance

🕺🏽The importance of finding your own style - and how to do it!

💃🏽 Variations of classic Jazz Steps

🎵 Explore your connection to your own body and personality

SESSION 2 - Josephine Baker Moves (1.5 hours)

Josephine Baker was one of the most iconic dancers of the 1920s! In this workshop, you will get to learn:

📖 Her story

💃🏽 Some of her iconic dance moves

🎵 Her dance style and unique characteristics

🕺🏽A fun routine to practice what you’ve learned

ABOUT GABS

Gabs started dancing at four years old and has never stopped. While spending a year abroad in Leeds, UK in 2012, she discovered the Jazz dances, fell hopelessly in love, and decided to dedicate her life to this passion. She is a dancer, teacher, choreographer, researcher, DJ and event organizer primarily in Brazil, and other Latin American communities. She specializes mainly in Lindy Hop, Authentic Jazz, 1920s’ Charleston, and Collegiate Shag.

In 2023, she became a Frankie Manning Foundation Scholar and also a part of the team that organized two editions of ILHC Latin America. She also works for iLindy, where she writes blog articles, weekly newsletter, and leads the production of new courses and projects.

Gabs is also a huge history geek and loves to dig deeper into the roots of Jazz music and dance. As a guest in the culture, she honours the opportunity to share the legacy and culture of Black American artists who created this art form.
